Uinahh: BINTULU, Section 39B

BINTULU: Cops seize drugs worth half a million ringgit, arrest 4 suspects.

The Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department scored its biggest success this year, following the seizure of drugs believed to be Syabu with an estimated market value of half a million ringgit after the arrest of four individuals in Bintulu on Feb 17.

This was disclosed by its chief Supt Moses Agat in a press conference held at Bintulu police headquarters yesterday.

He said acting on a public tip-off, officers from Bintulu Narcotics Department arrested a local man, aged 34, around 2pm soon after he came out from the office of a courier service provider at a commercial square here.

“Upon inspection, the police found Syabu with gross weight of about 1.045 kg in a box which was well-sealed in a food packet. The police also found other packets believed to contain Ecstasy pills weighing 90g,” he said.

The box was sent by an individual from Kuala Lumpur and, regretfully, the first suspect was a Rela member.

Moses added that the police mounted another operation on the same day just after midnight at a housing area and arrested another three suspects, one of them an Indonesian woman.

The woman is the wife of one of the men who were nabbed with another local man.

“All the suspects aged between 26 and 36 are remanded for seven days until February 25 to assist in police investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said, adding that all urine samples taken from the four suspects tested positive for drugs.

In the second arrest, the police seized cash amounting to RM11,000 from a local man who had a criminal record.

He said the drugs were believed to be for local consumption and all the suspects knew each other.

On whether the suspects had links with any syndicate, Moses said the police were looking into that angle.

“This latest case has directly boosted the total amount of syabu seized by the state police so far,” said Moses.

It is also believed that this is the first case this year that a foreigner is investigated under Section 39B which carries a mandatory death penalty by hanging upon conviction.

As of January until yesterday, a total of 39 drug-related cases involving 19 persons were recorded, he said.

Moses believed that the latest seizure was the biggest in the history of the police in Sarawak.

Also present at the press conference were Bintulu police chief Supt Madang Usat, his deputy DSP Mohd Said Ibrahim and Bintulu police Narcotics Department chief DSP Mohd Yusaini Kamisan.
